Katherine Montfort Katherine Montfort: Spring 2012 Recipient
Nurse Science

Katherine Montfort is the Spring Enrollment Sweepstakes winner. The Oklahoma City native was awarded 12 free tuition credit hours and one $500 Bookstore gift card, which are the prizes for all lucky students who are randomly selected for the enrollment sweepstakes each semester.

Montfort is currently studying nurse science with aspirations of becoming a labor and delivery nurse specializing in lactation.

“I want to ultimately become a lactation consultant to help breastfeeding mothers,” Montfort explains. “I have a four-month-old daughter and it was important to me that I exclusively breastfeed her.”

Winning the sweepstakes has been a “blessing” to Montfort as she will be able to spend more time with her daughter rather than work while being a full-time student.

Montfort’s advice for current students is to pursue college only when they are ready.

Melisa Tate Melisa Tate: Fall 2011 Recipient

“I wasn’t aware there was a sweepstakes going on, so it was a total surprise to receive the email congratulating me,” Tate says.

She has already purchased her books with the Bookstore gift card. As for having a tuition-free semester, she plans on blowing it at Disney World. Jokes aside, she says “actually it is a huge help for any student to receive something like this and I am grateful.”

Her advice for OSU-OKC students is to “appreciate your education and get all that you can out of the opportunity to learn.”

“It’s not as easy to understand that until you have some life points under your belt,” she explains. “But then again, you don’t have to be a genius just to appreciate what you have in front of you!”

He plans on spending the money he’s currently saving for next year and using the gift card for OSU-OKC books and apparel. McLean advises new students to stick with pursuing their education in order to separate them from the competition in their chosen field.

“In the beginning it’s easy to feel like you’re on the outside looking in,” he says. “But with every semester you complete, your goal for finishing grows stronger.”

David feels OSU-OKC has a lot to offer someone who works full time during the day and he appreciates the adjunct professors who teach at night after working a full day. “Without them it would have been a lot harder for me to earn my degree,” he said.
