Research and Writing: How Do I Start and Where Do I Go?

THE INTERNET DETECTIVE: WISE UP TO THE WEB - From the United Kingdom, this clever, fast paced Internet tutorial says it best, "...Sure, you use the Internet all the time, but you need to wise up to the web when you use it for your university or college work." (From the homepage of the Internet Detective) Knowing whether a website has good, solid information isn't as easy as it sounds, but this tutorial helps you evaluate for quality, as well as providing tips to avoid Internet plagiarism. [Place, E., Kendall, M., Hiom, D., Booth, H., Ayres, P., Manuel, A., Smith, P. (2006) "Internet Detective: Wise up to the Web", 3rd edition, Intute Virtual Training Suite, [online]. THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY OR, WHY IT'S A GOOD IDEA TO EVALUATE WEB SOURCES - From New Mexico State University, an older, but still good site on the dangers of grabbing the first good looking website you find. Through a series of 3 comparison websites and evaluation criteria, you learn what makes a good and trustworthy website. [Beck, Susan. The Good, The Bad & The Ugly: or, Why It's a Good Idea to Evaluate Web Sources. 1997. http://lib.nmsu.edu/instruction/eval.html]

THE OWL AT PURDUE - The OWL at Purdue homepage. There are so many different potentially helpful links on this page, I'll leave it up to you. Open the choices to the right using the "+" and "-" keys. Scan for a topic that discusses the process you are having trouble with - a thesis statement, for example. By clicking the "+" next to "The Wrting Process", I can now see and follow the link on thesis statements for more information and examples.
