OSU-OKC Library Interlibrary Loan Policy

Interlibrary Loan Department

Interlibrary Loan is a service provided to assist OSU-OKC Faculty, Staff and Students in locating and obtaining materials which are not available in the OSU-OKC Library. Books may be borrowed, or photocopies obtained in the case of periodicals or rare materials. Through the use of Interlibrary Loan, many resources are available to the researcher. Requests are transmitted via the OCLC (Online Computer Library Catalog) system or directly by written, phone, or FAX request.

  1. Requests for Interlibrary Loan material can be made in a variety of ways:
    1. The best option for requesting Interlibrary Loan material is to find your material on First Search (request the password from the Circulation Desk), follow the icons to "ILL" and fill out the material. When you push "submit" the information is automatically transmitted to the Interlibrary Loan department. Click here.
      Other options:
    2. Printed forms available in the Library which can be filled out while here;
    3. This form can be printed from this web page link, filled out and sent via campus mail to the Library Click here;
    4. This form can be saved to your hard drive, filled out, and e-mailed via attachment to the Interlibrary Loan Department. Click here.
    In order to receive the materials as quickly as possible, patrons should fill out all of the information requested on the form. A full citation is required; we will not do a blind search. The source of the reference is particularly important. It is helpful for the patron to include a photocopy of the citation.
  2. Please allow seven days to four weeks for an article or book to arrive. Response time depends on the location of the material and the promptness of the lending library. (There are 5 locations entered in the lender string, and each has 4 working days to respond.) Patrons will be notified by phone or campus mail when materials arrive. Items may be picked up at the Library circulation desk, or you may request them to be sent through campus mail (Faculty/Staff accepts responsibility). Materials should be returned promptly on the date due so we may return it to the lending library by the date they have stipulated.
  3. All borrowing and photocopying of materials is done within the provisions of the General Interlibrary Loan Code of the American Library Association, of the Oklahoma State Interlibrary Loan Code, and the U.S. Copyright Law and accompanying guidelines. The codes generally discourage or prohibit borrowing of inexpensive paperback materials, recent imprints (publication date during the present year), or whole volumes or issues of journals. The copyright law guidelines prohibit a library from borrowing more than five articles from one journal title during any one year for the previous five years' publication of that title.
  4. Dissertations usually cannot be borrowed because of the agreement universities have with University Microfilms International (UMI). Patrons may purchase Xerographic or microform copies from UMI; see librarian for procedures and address. Some dissertations are available for loan on microfiche. You are then responsible for making your own copies at the University of Oklahoma or another university that may have a reader. We will be glad to call any library to find out if they have a fiche reader.
  5. When titles (books and periodicals) are available from the Metropolitan Library System, we encourage the patron to pick up materials from the nearest branch library. Choosing this option means the patron will receive materials more quickly.
  6. Occasionally, a public patron may request an Interlibrary Loan. We refer these patrons to the Metropolitan Library System or to an appropriate college library.
  7. Generally, only books from the circulating collection will be loaned on Interlibrary Loan; i.e. NO Reference, Reserve, or entire periodical, no AV/DVDs that have been checked out in our Library less than one year ago and no books that have been in our collection less than 6 months (though exceptions are possible).
  8. Students and Staff may request up to five (5) books and/or articles. Adjunct Faculty may request up to twenty (20) books and/or articles. Faculty may request unlimited items, but they are requested to rank or group the requests as they may not all be input on the same day. The only charge passed on will be charges for lost materials or fines and penalties associated with overdue materials.
