WELCOME TO CA 2243 – PRACTICUM
Lisa Dillon, Associate Professor and Division Head of Human Services
Practicum placement is such a valuable part of your educational experience as an Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counseling major here at OSU – Oklahoma City. It is the course that gives you the opportunity to apply all of the theory you have learned in class to real life situations in the substance abuse counseling field. This is your time to show your future colleagues what you have to offer the field. You will be able to network with established professionals in the counseling field and learn from them as your mentors.
200 clock hours of field work is required for the completion of this course. The Twelve Core Function areas that a student must obtain experience in during practicum include:
Screening, Intake, Orientation, Assessment, Treatment Planning, Counseling, Case Management, Crisis Intervention, Client Education, Referral, Report/Record Keeping, Consultation.
It is important that you treat this practicum placement the same way as you would a professional work position. You are expected to follow the rules and policies of the facility, follow the facility’s dress code, have reliable attendance, be punctual, etc. Many students that have done well in their practicum placement have landed entry level positions with the facilities they have worked with, so treat this placement as a potential place of employment…you never know what will happen!
Below you find links to the Practicum Packet paperwork. This paperwork is a requirement of the course must be completed and returned per the directions. If at any time you have a question about the paperwork or the course, contact me at (405) 945-3214 or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Have a great semester!
