Annual Scholarships/Endowed Scholarships for Students

One increasing challenge at OSU-Oklahoma City is to keep college affordable. The typical student at this campus is mid- to late-twenties with both family responsibilities and a job, often a full-time job. Given the increasing cost of living, including food, gasoline, etc., and the cost of tuition, fees and books, many of our students find it increasingly difficult to attend college. Because of these financial pressures, some students are unable to attend college, stay in school or take as many courses as they would like.

Annually funded scholarships are those that are funded each year by friends and alumni. An annual gift in any amount may be used to provide a scholarship for a deserving student. Gifts made to annual scholarships are not invested and do not earn additional income.

Endowed scholarships provide a continued source of assistance for OSU-OKC students and create a lasting legacy for the donor.

Groups and corporations may create scholarships to reflect a specific connection to OSU-OKC or their interest in a specific discipline.

Donors determine the qualifications and restrictions for awarding scholarships with the assistance of the OSU Foundation. Recipients are chosen by scholarship committees depending on the donor’s preferences.

OSU alumnus T. Boone Pickens has announced an incredible testamentary challenge gift - the Pickens Legacy Scholarship Match - whereby he will match up to $100 million in outright gifts or pledges made to new or existing scholarships/fellowships within any area of the university. There is a $50,000 minimum gift level for match eligibility and corporate matching gifts may count toward minimum eligibility. Donors/families can band together to fund one endowed scholarship/fellowship at the minimum level. Pledge commitments may be paid over a five-year period. ELIGIBLE CONTRIBUTIONS FOR THIS MATCH MUST BE MADE BY OCTOBER 31, 2010.

Goal - $1.5 million

Health Technologies Educational Facility

OSU-Oklahoma City’s Health Services Division has added new programs and expanded its nursing program significantly in recent years. Also, new programs are being developed or planned for the near future. All these are attempts to help meet the increasing demand for better health care for Oklahomans. Without an adequate health care educational facility OSU-Oklahoma City cannot make an even greater contribution to the solution of the shortage of trained health care workers and the health care of its community. Developing programs in pharmacy technology, dietetic technology, etc., can only succeed and new programs can only be added if a facility is established. A new health education center is necessary and would include an auditorium seating 200 people, 25 offices, a clinical lab with 10-12 beds, storage space, classrooms and conference rooms.

Goal - $1 Million

Endowed Projects and Faculty support

OSU-Oklahoma City is not adequately funded to meet its state-wide technical mission. Our campus is perennially at the bottom of Oklahoma’s public colleges and universities in terms of funding per full-time equivalent students. In addition, unlike other metropolitan campuses such as Oklahoma City Community College, Rose State College and Tulsa Community College, OSU-Oklahoma City does not have funding from ad valorem taxes to supplement its budget. One result is that OSU-Oklahoma City students have paid an increasingly large share of the costs of their education. Because of these financial constraints, several important projects are either inadequately funded or drain resources from other educational priorities.

Examples of the projects that need additional financial support include professional development for faculty, a comprehensive plan to enhance student retention, support for single-parent students and support for the campus Child Development Center. Also, initial (2 years) salary support for additional full-time faculty is needed to start programs such as wind turbine technology, dietetic technology and pharmacy technology and expand programs such as nursing and power transmission and distribution technology. By funding an endowment to support these projects and providing one-time initial salary support to start and expand programs, some of OSU-Oklahoma City’s severely limited resources can be used to more directly assist faculty and students in the teaching and learning process.

Endowments

An endowment is money given to the University with a stipulation that the funds are invested to earn annual interest to be spent rather than spending the initial gift. Endowed gifts provide a continued source of assistance for OSU-OKC students, faculty and staff, and create a lasting legacy for the donor. A portion of the annual earnings are used to award student scholarships, provide faculty development or support OSU-OKC programs. Endowments can be established with cash gifts, securities or other property, or may be funded with a series of gifts made over time. They may also be funded through a bequest or other deferred gift or through a combination of lifetime and deferred gifts. Endowment funds are named at the donor’s request, whether in their names, in honor of loved ones or in tribute to a special faculty member or student.

Endowed Scholarships:

Endowed scholarships provide a continued source of assistance for OSU-OKC students and create a lasting legacy for the donor.

Endowed Chairs, Professorships and Lectureships:

Endowed faculty positions attract outstanding faculty with national and international recognition for quality teaching and research. In addition, the added expertise of these reputable educators provides the leadership to benefit and serve other faculty, students and the region. Lectureships provide quality programs with distinguished guest speakers to stimulate and enhance the intellectual climate of the University and surrounding communities.

  • Faculty Chair – $500,000 minimum endowment
  • Professorship – $250,000 minimum endowment
  • Lectureship (at OSU-OKC) – $25,000 minimum endowment

(Faculty Chairs, Professorships and Lectureships may qualify to receive some matching funds from the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education.)

Land for Expansion and Facilities for an Energy Lab

OSU-Oklahoma City is land-locked. Although the overall campus is composed of 99 acres, two major facilities coexist on the property with the campus. OSU-Oklahoma City has very little room to expand or build new programs. The health services division is in particular need of additional space.

The nursing program has expanded significantly in the past two years. New programs in health services such as pharmacy technology and dietetic technology need additional space, and the nursing program cannot expand without new facilities. An additional 2,400 square feet is needed to create the Energy Lab—providing lab space for large equipment needed, especially in the wind turbine technician program. The lab also accommodates large equipment used in other growing energy programs such as power transmission and distribution technology, and other alternative-power programs being developed at this time. If additional space and new lab facilities are not secured, the campus cannot expand to meet the demands for its technical programs and will not be able to adequately contribute to the development of Oklahoma’s workforce. The programs described above require modern facilities and equipment that reflects current technology. Without the proper facilities, these programs cannot fulfill their potential. The land needed is estimated to cost $800,000. Purchase of this land would secure sufficient space for OSU-Oklahoma City’s programs for the foreseeable future. The cost for the Energy Lab is $425,000.

Goal - $1,225,000

Equipment

As a technical campus with a state-wide mission, OSU-Oklahoma City must rely heavily on state-of-the-art equipment in its academic programs. Equipment necessary to keep technical programs current has become increasingly expensive. In addition, there is more and more technology available for education such as multimedia stations, Smart Boards, etc.

Academic technology such as a SignStation laboratory for the interpreter training program and additional equipment for programs in the public safety area are critical to the success of these programs. Further, effective teaching and learning across the campus requires the use of current academic technologies, especially on a campus such as OSU-Oklahoma City. Without adequate funding, the campus will have great difficulty in meeting the training and education needs of Oklahoma’s 21st century workforce. Funds would be used to purchase equipment for academic programs and to support the acquisition of additional equipment by the academic technologies unit within Academic Affairs.

Goal - $235,000
