Tips for Academic Success

  • Use a planner – good time management skills will be critical as you merge your school, work and private life.

  • Keep a balance. If you are working part-time you should be able to take a full load of classes; if you are working full-time, you would be best served by attending school only part-time.

  • Schedule time for study. It is recommended that for every hour you are in class you should set aside another two hours to keep up with the reading, homework and studying.

  • Divide large projects into smaller, manageable steps.

  • Never skip classes.

  • Select a study location that provides the least amount of distractions.

  • Develop a note taking and speedwriting system that works for you.

  • Be an active listener. Ask questions. Get to know your instructors.

  • Read the material to be covered before you go to class. This will make note taking and comprehension easier.

  • When studying, space your study sessions over a long period of time. Cramming does not move information into long-term memory. Three 20-minutes sessions, with breaks, will be more productive than a study session that lasts full 60 minutes.

  • To maximize your college experience, get involved on campus and get to know other students. In addition to support and friendships, these students can often give you insight into your classes and instructors.

  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle - eat right, exercise, and get plenty of sleep.

  • Keep a positive attitude. If you tell yourself you can’t – you won’t.
