May 2017: Bonner Slayton

Liberal Arts Division Part-Time Faculty of the Month: Bonner Slayton

Congratulations to OSU-OKC English Professor Bonner Slayton! Slayton is the third recipient of the Liberal Arts Division’s Part-Time Faculty of the Month Award.

A native Oklahoman, Dr. Slayton has been an instructor at OSU-OKC since 2006. When he was a child, Bonner’s school principal told him, “Professional people do professional things,” words that continue to inspire him to this day. He says, “I can’t expect my students to reach for excellence in their lives if I’m not reaching for excellence in mine.” What keeps him striving to do his best is hearing from former students who tell him that he made a difference in their lives.

“Dr. Slayton is an outstanding teacher, scholar, and colleague. His classes are consistently the first night classes to fill due to his reputation as a fair and dedicated instructor. Students respond to his caring attitude and his smiling face. It is a pleasure to work with a talented and hard-working teacher like Bonner.” – Dr. Karen Jobe, English Department Head

Linda Foster, Instructor
Technical Spanish Program, Department of Humanities

Congratulations to OSU-OKC Professor Linda Foster! Foster is the first recipient of the Liberal Arts Division’s Part-Time Faculty of the Month Award.

Professor Linda Foster has been teaching Spanish in the Technical Spanish & Translation Program at OSU-OKC since 2002. Linda received her bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Oklahoma Baptist University and completed her master’s degree at the University of Oklahoma. She has taught students ranging from pre-K children to university-level adults. Linda has been honored with a number of teaching awards, including the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development Excellence Award and the OSU-OKC Outstanding Adjunct Award.

“The comments I have received from Linda’s students are overwhelmingly positive,” said Dr. Jerry Rice, OSU-OKC Technical Spanish associate professor. “Students like her energy and creative methods to get them involved in expressing themselves in Spanish class. She demonstrates that she cares about her students and is really interested in helping them learn. I appreciate Linda’s willingness to adapt to different schedules and situations as we plan for each new semester and I enjoy having her as part of our team.”

OSU-OKC Humanities Department Head Dr. Breeman Ainsworth agrees adding, “Teaching is about more than simply conveying information to students. The best teachers draw out the best in their students. They inspire. They nurture. Linda does all of these things and more. We are excited to recognize her with this inaugural award.”

Linda’s favorite part of teaching is laughing with her students and making learning fun. She approaches each class with enthusiasm, but never forgets the advice given to her by an early mentor: “Think of the worst thing that could happen and plan for it.” Regarding teaching at OSU-OKC, she says, “OSU-OKC students are the best! Every semester I meet the most amazing individuals!” Professor Foster is also a gifted musician and often sings to her students to capture their attention and help make lessons more enjoyable.

Linda has lived in Oklahoma all but the first four years of her life when her father was stationed overseas; her family lived in Turkey, Italy and Germany during those years. Linda also spent a semester in Valencia, Spain, while pursuing her undergraduate degree. Oklahoma City is home for Linda, and she loves attending Zoobilation at the OKC Zoo each June. She enjoys reading the Old Testament in her spare time and describes herself as inquisitive, empathetic and nurturing. Perhaps the most important thing we should know about Linda is that she simply cannot live without chocolate!

Please join us in congratulating Professor Foster on being recognized as the Liberal Arts Part-Time Faculty of the Month!
