OSU-OKC Talent Search Alumna Competes in Miss Oklahoma Latina, Speaks to PC West Hispanic Parents

Former OSU-OKC Talent Search student and Putnam City West High School graduateElizabeth Flores was recently the featured speaker at PC West’s Cafecitos meeting. The monthly meetings are held for PC West Hispanic parents to learn about what is going on in their children’s school and to hear about programs that could be of service to them.

Flores, a Sports Broadcasting senior at the University of Oklahoma, recently represented Norman in this year’s Miss Oklahoma Latina contest. Her platform emphasized Promoting Pre-college TRIO Programs Among Latino Student Populations.

She related her experiences as a low-income, potential first-generation college student. To the roomful of parents, she praised these federal pre-college programs—Talent Search and Upward Bound—as they are often the most reliable sources of information and aid for pre-college students and families who dare to dream of higher education.

Elizabeth Flores is now just 20 credit hours from graduation at OU. In addition to her college classwork, she is also an intern with KOHC-CD, the local MundoFox Spanish television affiliate. Although, Flores now wears crimson and cream, she began her college career wearing America’s Brightest Orange right here at OSU-OKC.

OSU-OKC Talent Search Office Assistant Cynthia Turrubiartes added support to Flores’ TRIO advocacy during the recent PC West meeting. Turrubiartes, a U.S. Grant graduate, was unaware of Talent Search while she attended high school. She related how her sister, a current Talent Search senior at Grant, was better prepared and better understood what, how and when to access resources to help her earn the degree and the educational experience that she desires.
