OSU-OKC Student Named Phi Theta Kappa Regional President

OSU-Oklahoma City student Rashida Jones was recently named Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) President for the Oklahoma/Arkansas Region during the organization’s regional officer elections held at the University of Arkansas.

Throughout the weekend of the PTK presidential elections, Jones spent her time campaigning against other candidates. Encouraging voters with candy roses, she stressed her qualifications and involvement on the OSU-OKC campus, which includes more than 100 hours of volunteer work and commitment to PTK as well as serving as the Black Student Association activities coordinator and Student Government Association secretary.

Once the campaign ended, each candidate was required to give a speech on the culture of competition eliminating words such as “we” or “me,” a task Jones took seriously. After their speeches, they had to answer three follow-up questions.

To prepare herself for the new position, Jones will attend training in Ft. Smith, Ark. With her new role, she says she is most excited to be able to attend the annual PTK convention later this month.

“I wasn’t going to be able to go because there wasn’t enough funding,” Jones says. “But now that I am regional president, I’m going to be able to go.”

Catherine Palmer, OSU-OKC PTK advisor and Dietetic Technician Department Head, is equally excited for Jones.

“I’m extremely impressed with her… She did an amazing job,” says Palmer. “She will represent not only our school well, but also both states.”

Jones has already completed her early care education degree at OSU-OKC and has returned for a second degree in nursing. She has big plans for the future.

“My dream is to run a daycare for sick children,” Jones says. “Now that I have my degree in childcare, I came back for nursing. Once I complete that, I want to go to [the University of Central Oklahoma] and get my bachelor’s degree in special education.”

Jones will be PTK Oklahoma/Arkansas Regional President for the 2013-2014 academic year. For more information about OSU-OKC’s PTK chapter, visit www.osuokc.edu/ptk. To find out more about the Oklahoma/Arkansas Regional PTK chapter, visit www2.ptk.org/regions/Oklahoma_Arkansas_Region.htm.
