Two OSU-Oklahoma City students are featured on the Oklahoma House of Representatives Internship Web site. Deshelda Hall and Britney Guerriero recently interned with the House of Representatives and were happy to share their experience with potential interns. Hall obtained her associates in public service from OSU-OKC this spring, while Guerriero is currently seeking the same degree.
“Extraordinary best describes my work experience at the Oklahoma House of Representatives,” Hall said. “Honored to serve, I learned administrative duties such as techniques for reading and summarizing bills, and highlighting content of importance to the representative’s views. I highly recommend this honorable experience to those interested in developing a knowledge base of politics in its political strategic eloquence.”
Public service degree-seeking students have the opportunity to tour the Oklahoma State Capitol with Robin Scott, Social Sciences associate professor. Attendants get the opportunity to see inside the building and to learn about internships. The student’s annual trip to the Capitol is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 19.
House Representatives interns work closely with legislators and staff shaping public policy for the state’s 3 million residents. They have the opportunity to develop interpersonal communication skills, and both political and administrative skills. Prospective interns are placed with legislators or staff according to the interests and goals of each applicant.
“Interning at the House of Representatives was a great experience that I will value for the rest of my life,” Guerriero said. “I was assigned to Representative Mike Thompson. Watching him and his staff allowed me to glimpse the world of lawmaking that I would have otherwise never seen and I believe that this was very beneficial to my scholastic career as well as any professional career I embark on.”
