Faculty Spotlight: Jason Stone, Division Head of Liberal Arts

This past semester, Professor Jason Stone recognized a discrepancy in one of his classes. Students, it seemed, were not as comfortable with soft skills such as handshakes or eye contact as they should. Stone defines soft skills as, “things like communication, attitude, team work, networking, problem solving, and professionalism.” Often, these types of skills are important building blocks for academic success and career building both in and out of the classroom.

To meet this need, Stone not only redesigned the syllabus of Introduction to Speech Communication to include nonverbal communication and handshaking but also authored an in-depth article covering these important concepts. The article was published in NISOD’s Innovation Abstracts, a teaching and learning strategies publication, and can be found HERE.

Congratulations to Professor Stone!
