During the summer of 1999, The Butterfly Garden was built to compliment the Community Garden. The project was made possible by funds donated by the Oklahoma City Council of Garden clubs. Julia Laughlin's Garden Flowers class built the dry river stone bed and planted the flowers, herbs and shrubs.
As the name implies, the garden is designed to provide everything necessary to sustain the lovely butterflies that call Oklahoma home. Herbs such as fennel and dill are planted to serve as hosts to the butterfly caterpillar and many beautiful flowers and shrubs that provide nectar for the adult butterfly surround them. As an added delight, the garden is design and planted in the shape of a butterfly.
From spring through fall the garden if full of a wide variety of caterpillars, moths and butterflies. Aromas from the herbs mix gently in the breeze with the lovely fragrances of the flowers. You can usually find a Black Swallowtail caterpillar crawling on the fennel, dill or parsley, and butterflies of many varieties sunning themselves on the sun-rocks or sipping from the butterfly pond.
